Police have arrested Vengesai Jabulani Mutasa (41) following a violent rampage in Sanyati that left one police officer dead and another seriously injured.
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrest, identifying the slain officer as Constable Courage Muchechesi, who was fatally shot at ZRP Sanyati Police Station.
"The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms the arrest of Vengesai Jabulani Mutasa (41) after the callous and brutal shooting to death of Constable Courage Muchechesi at ZRP Sanyati," said Commissioner Nyathi.
He said Mutasa allegedly shot Detective Constable Ngwenya of the CID Homicide section, who was part of a team attempting to apprehend him in connection with the murder of businessman Joseph Mutangadura in August 2025. After the shooting, Mutasa reportedly fled the scene and robbed a civilian of US$5.
Following the incident, police launched a massive manhunt that involved officers from Sanyati, Kadoma, Chakari, and Patchway, working closely with local communities. The suspect was eventually captured after a swift and coordinated operation.
Commissioner Nyathi commended residents for their bravery and cooperation during the manhunt. "The Zimbabwe Republic Police commends members of the public in Sanyati, Kadoma, Chakari, and Patchway who quickly mobilised and assisted to effect an arrest on the suspect," he said.
He added that further details will be released as investigations continue, while assuring the nation that justice will be served for the slain officer and his injured colleague.
Constable Muchechesi's death has reignited concern over the dangers faced by law enforcement officers in the line of duty, with police reiterating their commitment to maintaining safety and upholding justice.
