The Meteorological Services Department (MSD) has issued a warning of heavy rains exceeding 50mm, accompanied by lightning and strong winds, expected to affect most parts of the country from tomorrow until Friday.

According to the MSD advisory, the provinces likely to be affected include Manicaland, Matabeleland North and South, Bulawayo Metropolitan, Midlands, Masvingo, Harare Metropolitan, and all three Mashonaland provinces.

The department cautioned that flash floods could occur in flood-prone areas and river basins, particularly in Manicaland, Masvingo, Harare, Bulawayo, Midlands, and northern parts of Matabeleland North.

"A thick cloud is approaching the western borders of the country from Botswana and is expected to be coupled with moisture from the south-east. This will result in heavy rainfall (exceeding 50mm) as well as strong winds in provinces such as the northern parts of Matabeleland North, Matabeleland South, Bulawayo Metropolitan, Midlands, Manicaland, and Harare Metropolitan Provinces, effective from the afternoon of Wednesday, November 5, till Friday," said the MSD.

The department also warned that roads may become slippery and visibility could be reduced due to heavy rainfall, urging motorists to exercise caution and increase braking distances.

Members of the public have been advised to take safety precautions, including securing rooftops, trimming loose branches, and ensuring animals are kept in safe shelters. MSD also warned against standing under trees, near tall poles, or using electrical appliances during storms.

"When lightning flashes, go inside a house or building. Do not stand under a tree or next to a tall pole or object. During a storm, avoid using machines or open vehicles like tractors, avoid open areas, and avoid using taps or showers. Do not go into flooded areas and follow regular updates on official MSD platforms," the advisory read.

The MSD further urged citizens to stay alert and follow guidance from the Department of Civil Protection as the country braces for the approaching storm system.
