Mother kills son with two knives, sleeps next to corpse

A shocking family tragedy unfolded in Hobhouse suburb on 20 November when Netsai Chikuni (39) was arrested for allegedly murdering her son in a grisly incident described by police as "too bizarre to comprehend."

National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the boy was found with multiple stab wounds to the head and neck inside their Mushamukadzi home. Two blood-stained kitchen knives were discovered near the body, suggesting a violent struggle. The victim's age was still being verified at the time of the report.

In a startling scene, officers found Chikuni asleep next to her son, reportedly with self-inflicted injuries on her hands and legs, raising suspicions that she may have attempted to harm herself following the attack. Witnesses described the scene as resembling a ritual gone wrong or the result of a possible mental breakdown.

Comm Nyathi emphasized that the motive remains unclear. "The suspect allegedly assaulted her son to death for reasons yet to be established. We are still establishing the motive," he said, urging the public to refrain from speculation as investigations continue.

The boy's body was transported to Mutare Provincial Hospital for post-mortem examination, while Chikuni remains under police guard pending further inquiries. Authorities confirmed that the investigation is ongoing.
