The Matobo Rural District Council (RDC) is optimistic that next year's Independence Day celebrations, scheduled for April 2026 at Maphisa growth point, will shine a national spotlight on the area and attract investment. Council plans to slash service charges during the event to encourage business activity and investment, a move officials say will benefit both the local economy and residents.

Matobo RDC chief executive Elvis Sibanda revealed that the announcement of Maphisa as the host of the Uhuru Day celebrations has already sparked interest from investors seeking opportunities in the area. Several applications have been received from individuals aiming to construct lodges, medical centres, and other businesses to cater to the expected influx of visitors.

"We have come up with some lay-out plans for businesses such as a medical centre whereby the investor is more than ready to start construction," Sibanda said. "We also have a new filling station because there are thousands of people who will be coming to attend the celebrations. We have engaged the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority so that all those with houses they can offer as accommodation can register the properties for accommodating visitors while ensuring that they meet the standards required."

Sibanda emphasized that the celebrations would offer residents an opportunity to generate income, with small and medium enterprises being accommodated in the programme. To facilitate participation, the council plans to temporarily relax certain policies and minimize charges, allowing more people to engage in business activities during the event. "This is a period for people to take advantage and as a local authority this will boost our revenue collection because we will capitalise on the volumes of people seeking our services," he said.

The council chief urged the business community to upgrade and beautify their properties to make them more appealing to visitors and investors. He also expressed confidence that road infrastructure in the area would be improved, noting that central government typically upgrades facilities and access routes in regions hosting national events.

With strategic planning, relaxed charges, and active investor engagement, Matobo RDC is positioning Maphisa to benefit economically and socially from hosting the 2026 Independence Day celebrations.
