An Ingwebu Breweries delivery truck was swept into the swollen Nkankezi River in Insiza District after the driver attempted to cross a flooded bridge, authorities have confirmed.
The incident, which occurred during heavy rains in Matabeleland South, saw the truck partially submerged with crates of beer scattered downstream. According to the Matabeleland South Provincial Civil Protection Committee, no casualties were recorded.
“Some of the calabashes were swept downstream,” the committee reported, referring to the traditional containers used for transporting opaque beer.
The truck, branded with Ingwebu’s signature red crates, was en route to deliver beer when the driver misjudged the depth and force of the river. Eyewitnesses say the vehicle was quickly overwhelmed by the current, forcing a halt to operations and triggering a local response.
Authorities have urged drivers to exercise caution and avoid crossing flooded rivers, especially during the rainy season when water levels can rise rapidly and unpredictably.
