Zambia and Zimbabwe have reaffirmed their commitment to a joint venture to develop the $4.2 billion Batoka Gorge Hydropower Plant, a 2,400-megawatt facility located near the iconic Victoria Falls.
Under the agreement, both countries will contribute $220 million each toward the project. A newly established committee has been tasked with mobilising additional funding for the associated public infrastructure and exploring equity partnerships to ensure the plant's financial viability.
After delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and funding challenges, the project has now entered a critical phase. Engineering and environmental studies have officially commenced, with the Zambezi River Authority (ZRA) appointing technical, legal, and financial consultants to guide the process.
The Batoka Gorge hydropower plant is expected to provide a stable and sustainable electricity supply for both Zambia and Zimbabwe, complementing existing large-scale solar and thermal energy initiatives in the region. Once operational, the facility is set to significantly strengthen power security, support economic development, and enhance regional energy cooperation.
