A 21-year-old man from Mufakose has been sentenced to 20 years' imprisonment at Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison after being convicted of crimes involving a two-year-old child.
The accused appeared before Harare magistrate Noel Mupeiwa, who ruled that his defence was weak and that the State had presented overwhelming evidence.
The court heard that the convict was a family friend of the complainant. According to prosecutor Cecilia Mashingaidze, the incident occurred on January 7 this year when the accused visited the complainant's parents' home. He was reportedly seated in the same room as the minor and her stepbrother while the child's mother was in the kitchen.
The mother heard the toddler screaming and rushed to check, but the child did not immediately disclose what had happened. Concerned, she reported the matter to the police.
The minor was later interviewed and referred for a medical examination, which confirmed that she had been harmed. The complainant's stepbrother also provided relevant information during a police interview.
Following the trial, the court found the accused guilty and imposed a 20-year custodial sentence.
