A 27‑year‑old man from Mbare, Eric Chamunorwa, has been jailed for 40 months after he was convicted by the Mbare Magistrates' Court of stealing from his employer.
Chamunorwa will serve an effective 16 months after six months were suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour, while a further 18 months were suspended on condition that he restitutes the complainant.
The court heard that between March 2025 and February 2026, the complainant - a manager at the company where Chamunorwa was employed - noticed substantial amounts of money disappearing from his office. He set a trap by leaving a small bag containing US$220 and briefly stepping outside.
When he returned, only a US$100 note remained. He immediately searched Chamunorwa and found the missing money in his pocket. The offender later admitted that he had been stealing from his employer for some time and had used the proceeds to buy luxury items.
The total amount stolen was US$12,430, of which US$2,500 was recovered.
Authorities said theft causes significant distress to victims and undermines trust in workplaces.
