Tragedy struck at Clydesdale Dam on February 24, 2025, when two men drowned while participating in traditional rituals, authorities confirmed.
Midlands provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, said 15 people—10 women and five men—had gathered at the dam to perform the rituals when the incident occurred.
"The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms two cases of sudden death in which two men drowned at Clydesdale Dam, Gweru, on 24 February 2025," Inspector Mahoko said.
Rescue teams, including officers from the Sub Aqua Unit, responded to the scene and recovered the bodies the following day. One of the deceased was positively identified as 46-year-old Philemon Matavire of Woodlands, Gweru, while the second man has yet to be identified.
Police have launched an investigation into the incident. Inspector Mahoko urged the public to exercise caution around deep water bodies, warning against taking unnecessary risks in rivers, dams, and other flooded areas.
The tragic deaths serve as a stark reminder of the dangers of venturing into water bodies without proper safety measures, even during cultural or ritual activities.
