PSL 2026 season kicks off

The 2026 Premier Soccer League (PSL) season bursts into life this weekend amid excitement over new entrants and venues — but controversy over match-day gate charges and stadium logistics has cast an early shadow over the campaign.

The curtain-raiser on Friday will see top-flight debutants Hunters FC host MWOS at Rufaro Stadium. Four fixtures follow on Saturday, with another four scheduled for Sunday in what promises to be a packed opening round.

A landmark moment for the league will unfold in Kwekwe, where Chahwanda Stadium makes its bow as a PSL-approved venue. Midlands-based newcomers Hardrock FC are set to host defending champions Scotland FC on Sunday, marking the first Premiership match at the facility.

However, the historic occasion has been overshadowed by controversy surrounding ticket pricing. Hardrock announced on social media that the cheapest entry ticket for the match would cost US$10 - a significant jump from last season's framework, which pegged general admission between US$1 and US$5.

The Premier Soccer League has since clarified that the proposed figures are yet to receive official approval. Revised gate charges are expected to be ratified at the PSL Annual General Meeting scheduled for Saturday. Until then, clubs remain bound by the 2025 pricing structure.

The development has drawn mixed reactions from football stakeholders.

Former Southern Region chairperson Musa Mandaza acknowledged the commercial appeal of the fixture but urged caution.

"The game between Hardrock and Scotland is a high-profile fixture. Yes, it could be reasonable to charge higher gate fees given the excitement surrounding the promotion of the team. But many supporters may be priced out. The PSL and Hardrock management should consider their fans, who are integral to the team's identity," said Mandaza.

Football analyst Dr Laiton Ncube criticised the timing of the announcement.

"It is unfortunate that Hardrock announced gate charges before PSL approval. The league is governed by statutes, which must be observed. While times are changing and clubs are looking to boost revenues, adherence to rules remains critical for the credibility of Zimbabwean football," he said.

Regional comparisons further highlight the debate. In Malawi, league tickets average around US$3. In South Africa, prices typically range from 40 to 60 rand, with marquee fixtures such as the Soweto Derby costing about R100. In Zambia, match tickets generally sell for just over one US dollar.

Beyond pricing, venue congestion remains another pressing issue. In Harare, five top-flight teams will share Rufaro Stadium, which is set to host three matches this weekend alone: Hunters versus MWOS on Friday, Herentals against Chicken Inn on Saturday, and CAPS United taking on Agama on Sunday.

In Bulawayo, Barbourfields Stadium is currently the city's only PSL-approved venue. It will stage home matches for Highlanders, Chicken Inn and Bulawayo Chiefs — a scenario that raises concerns about fixture congestion and pitch sustainability as the season progresses.

As the 2026 campaign kicks off, the PSL faces the delicate task of balancing commercial growth with supporter accessibility, while ensuring stadium infrastructure can withstand the demands of a long and competitive season.
