The Zimbabwean government is facing criticism after committing US$25 million to a new national football tournament, with critics arguing that the funds could have been directed toward struggling public services such as healthcare.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Wednesday officially launched the Munhumutapa ZIFA Cup during a ceremony in Harare. The tournament will run over the next five years, with the US$25 million funding spread across the period.

The competition, organised by the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA), is expected to feature multiple categories including men's, women's, developmental and futsal teams.

However, the announcement has sparked a wave of criticism from some public figures who believe the government's priorities are misplaced.

Prominent lawyer Thabani Mpofu questioned the decision, arguing that public funds should instead be directed toward essential services.

"Don't get me wrong, footballers must be paid but ED has his priorities totally wrong. If footballers get injured, they cannot even get assistance from the top referral hospitals," Mpofu said in a post on the social media platform X.

"Why is ED averse to taking decisions that promote the common good? Does he hate us for not voting for him in two elections?" he added.

The Munhumutapa ZIFA Cup has been billed as the biggest domestic football competition in Zimbabwe, with significant prize money on offer.

The winners of the men's category will receive US$1 million and earn a place to represent Zimbabwe in the CAF Confederation Cup. In the women's tournament, the champions will take home US$200 000, a move some observers say could boost the development of women's football in the country.

Despite the potential benefits for the sport, questions have also been raised over the source of the tournament's funding.

Former legislator Fadzayi Mahere publicly questioned where the US$25 million allocation was coming from.

Neither the government nor ZIFA has yet disclosed the exact funding mechanism for the tournament, fueling further debate about transparency and spending priorities.
