President Emmerson Mnangagwa has praised businessman Wicknell Chivayo, describing him as having a "golden heart" after he donated a fleet of ambulances and fuel to the government in a high-profile gesture aimed at strengthening the country's healthcare system.
The donation, made at State House on Wednesday, included 10 ambulances and 200,000 litres of fuel, with an estimated value exceeding US$400,000. It follows a similar donation of 10 ambulances by Chivayo last year, reinforcing his growing profile as a notable private sector contributor to public initiatives.
Accepting the donation, President Mnangagwa commended Chivayo for supporting government programmes under Vision 2030, which aims to modernise Zimbabwe's healthcare system and improve service delivery across the country.
He described the contribution as an example of how the private sector can complement government efforts, urging other companies to emulate the gesture in supporting national development goals.
The ambulances, described by the President as "state-of-the-art," are equipped with advanced medical equipment including oxygen systems, defibrillators, and patient monitoring technology. According to the announcement, the vehicles will be deployed across all ten provinces to enhance emergency response services and improve access to critical care.
Chivayo, a controversial but influential figure known for high-value donations and a flamboyant lifestyle, has previously made headlines for distributing luxury vehicles, cash, and other gifts to a wide range of recipients, including public figures and organisations.
While his philanthropic gestures have drawn praise, his business dealings and sources of wealth have often attracted scrutiny due to a lack of public transparency. Nonetheless, his latest contribution has been positioned as a boost to public healthcare infrastructure at a time when the system continues to face significant challenges.
The event underscores ongoing collaboration between the government and private sector in addressing gaps in public service delivery, particularly in critical sectors such as health.
