The Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service has confirmed the death of an inmate at Chikurubi Farm Prison, dismissing initial allegations of assault while launching an independent investigation into the incident.
The deceased, Gift Mbowa, was serving a 12-month sentence when he was found unresponsive in his cell around 3am on March 20, 2026.
According to ZPCS, Mbowa had earlier complained of chest pains before his sudden death.
In a statement issued following reports circulating on social media suggesting possible abuse by prison wardens, the correctional service urged the public to exercise caution while investigations are underway.
"The ZPCS acknowledges with concern reports circulating on social media alleging that the death may have been linked to assault. We take such allegations with the utmost seriousness," the statement read.
Authorities said a full and independent probe has been instituted to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
"In line with our commitment to accountability, transparency and the protection of all persons in our custody, a full and independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident has been instituted," ZPCS said.
The service emphasised that any conduct found to be inconsistent with human rights standards or professional conduct would be dealt with in accordance with the law.
ZPCS also extended condolences to Mbowa's family, confirming that they have been formally notified of his passing.
The outcome of the investigation is expected to provide clarity amid growing public concern over inmate welfare and conditions within correctional facilities.
