Zimbabwe women's topflight league in false start

The 2026 season of the Zimbabwe Women Premier Soccer League (ZWPSL) has stumbled out of the blocks after one of its opening fixtures was abandoned due to a lack of mandatory match-day requirements.

A scheduled clash between Rise of Hope and Correctional Queens at Bata Stadium failed to take place after organisers could not secure an ambulance and officers from the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP).

Under league regulations, matches cannot proceed without minimum safety and security provisions. As a result, the game was forfeited, with Correctional Queens awarded a walkover and three points.

ZWPSL rules clearly state that no match should begin or continue in the absence of adequate security arrangements. Referees and match commissioners are empowered to halt proceedings if conditions are deemed unsafe for players, officials or spectators.

The incident has raised early alarm bells about the league's preparedness and organisation at the start of the new campaign.

The disruption echoes longstanding structural issues that have plagued women's football in Zimbabwe. In previous seasons, clubs have struggled with basic operational costs, including travel expenses, referees' fees and access to suitable venues.

These logistical challenges have often overshadowed critical issues such as player welfare and remuneration.

The league's executive, led by chairperson Chido Chizondo, alongside Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA), now faces mounting pressure to stabilise the competition and improve professionalism.

The situation is further complicated by the absence of a title sponsor for the 2026 season, raising fresh concerns about the league's financial sustainability and long-term viability.

With the campaign barely underway, stakeholders fear the latest setback could signal another turbulent season unless urgent corrective measures are implemented.

For players and fans alike, the hope remains that authorities can address the recurring shortcomings and steer the ZWPSL toward a more stable and competitive future.
