The long-awaited refurbishment of Sakubva Stadium in Mutare is gathering momentum, with the installation of new bucket seats marking a major milestone in the ongoing transformation of the historic sporting venue.

For decades, the stadium has served as the centre of football culture in Mutare, hosting memorable matches and drawing passionate crowds from across the eastern border city. Now, authorities say the latest upgrades are aimed at modernising the facility and aligning it with international standards.

Contractors are already on site preparing for the installation of the newly delivered bucket seats, which will cover the entire stadium. Once completed, the seating upgrade is expected to significantly improve spectator comfort while giving the venue a more contemporary appearance.

The renovation programme extends beyond seating. Ongoing works include plans to rehabilitate the playing surface, refurbish changing rooms, modernise media facilities, improve player tunnels and ablution blocks, and expand parking areas as well as entry and exit points to improve crowd movement and safety.

The City of Mutare has been implementing the project in phases over several years as part of a broader effort to restore Sakubva Stadium while adapting it to modern football requirements. City of Mutare principal communications officer Charles Sadondo said the delivery of the bucket seats is expected to accelerate progress on the remaining works, describing the development as a significant step in the stadium's transformation.

He added that the long-term goal is to develop a facility capable of hosting international matches once full refurbishment is complete. The city also acknowledged the role of residents in supporting infrastructure development through payment of rates, which helps fund such projects.

Beyond sport, the upgrade reflects a wider push to reposition local stadiums as multi-purpose urban assets that can support economic activity, tourism, and community engagement. Modern sporting facilities are increasingly seen as part of broader city development strategies rather than just match-day venues.

For Mutare residents, the changes at Sakubva Stadium carry symbolic weight, representing both civic pride and renewed optimism about the return of top-tier football to a ground deeply embedded in the city's sporting identity.
