Police question reduced deployment at Chahwanda stadium

Police have revealed that the number of officers deployed for Sunday's high-profile match between Hardrock and Dynamos at Chahwanda Stadium was cut to half of what had been recommended, raising questions over crowd control arrangements during the violent scenes that led to the game's abandonment.

National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed that although police had recommended a deployment of 90 officers, only 40 were on duty at the stadium during the match.

The Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League (PSL) had reportedly agreed with the host club, Hardrock FC, on a deployment of about 80 officers for the fixture, which attracted a large crowd.

However, police say the final number was significantly reduced, a decision they allege was influenced by the home side's management.

"As police we are saying soccer team authorities should not interfere with the management of public order," said Commissioner Nyathi.

He said the reduced deployment may have contributed to the breakdown in order that saw fans invading the pitch and clashing violently during the match, which was abandoned with the score tied at 1–1.

Police have since arrested Hardrock FC chief executive officer Kudzanai Hove in connection with the disturbances. He was reportedly captured on video restraining a Dynamos supporter during the chaos that left several fans injured.

Nyathi said investigations are ongoing and that police are pursuing all individuals linked to the violence "without fear or favour."

"The Zimbabwe Republic Police has arrested Hardrock FC chief executive officer following the violence at Chahwanda Stadium on Sunday," he said. "Police are casting their net wider with a view to know what exactly transpired."

Authorities say officers are still working to establish the full sequence of events, including how nearly 5,000 spectators who were initially unable to enter the stadium later gained access.

The incident has renewed scrutiny on stadium security planning, crowd management, and coordination between clubs, the PSL, and law enforcement ahead of major fixtures.
