Five Waterfalls residents have appeared in court facing murder charges following a brutal alleged mob justice attack that left an unidentified man dead after he was severely assaulted and tied to a ZESA pole over accusations of theft.
The accused — Florence Mawere (54), Joel Mawere (19), Cosmas Tatenda Takaendesa (36), Kudiwa Siyamwi (22), and Shingirayi Chawira (35) — appeared before Harare Magistrate Ruth Moyo in connection with the fatal incident which allegedly occurred in Grobbie Park, Waterfalls.
According to the State, represented by prosecutor Lawrence Gangarahwe, the incident took place on May 23, 2026, along Selsey Road.
Prosecutors allege the now deceased man was confronted by the group, who accused him of stealing a bag belonging to Florence Mawere.
The court heard that the suspects allegedly assaulted the man before tying him to a ZESA pole using a rope.
State allegations further claim the group continued attacking him using tree branches, polythene pipes and sjamboks while pouring cold water on him during the assault.
The man later succumbed to injuries allegedly sustained during the attack.
The case has once again raised concern over increasing incidents of mob justice in Zimbabwe, where suspected thieves are often attacked by members of the public instead of being handed over to law enforcement authorities.
Human rights groups have consistently warned against vigilante violence, noting that such attacks frequently result in loss of life and sometimes target individuals based on unverified accusations.
The accused persons were remanded in custody pending further investigations and court proceedings.
