Zimbabweans outraged as millions-spent National Sports Stadium flops

Football supporters have criticised the reopening of Zimbabwe's National Sports Stadium, saying the facility remains below acceptable standards despite reports of millions of dollars invested by the Treasury in renovation works.

Fans who spoke to ZiFM Stereo News expressed disappointment over the condition of the stadium, calling for greater accountability in public spending and questioning the quality of the upgrades carried out.

The backlash comes shortly after the stadium was reopened for a domestic league match in which CAPS United suffered a 2-0 defeat to Scottland FC, a fixture that marked one of the first major events hosted at the venue following refurbishment.

Supporters said the government should ensure that public infrastructure projects deliver visible value for money, arguing that the current state of the stadium does not reflect the level of funding reportedly allocated for its rehabilitation.

The National Sports Stadium, Zimbabwe's largest sporting venue, has in recent years undergone periodic closures for maintenance and upgrades aimed at meeting international standards and restoring its status as a premier football venue.

However, recurring concerns over pitch quality, seating conditions, and overall infrastructure have continued to fuel public debate about the effectiveness of renovation efforts and the management of major sporting facilities.

Authorities have not yet issued a formal response to the latest criticism from fans.
