The Air Force of Zimbabwe (AFZ) has announced the death of Wing Commander John Katandika, who passed away on Wednesday following a short illness.

He was 60.

In a statement, AFZ Staff Officer Grade One Public Relations Wing Commander Donovan Muroyiwa said the senior officer died after a brief illness.

Air Force of Zimbabwe Commander Air Marshal Jacob John Nzvede described Katandika's passing as a significant loss to both the Air Force and the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF).

He said news of the senior officer's death had been received with profound shock and sadness throughout the defence forces.

"It is a sad moment for the Air Force of Zimbabwe and I want to express my deepest condolences to the Katandika and Marumbi families, his friends and colleagues," Air Marshal Nzvede said.

"The late Wing Commander Katandika leaves behind a legacy of hard work and unwavering dedication to duty in the service of the AFZ and ZDF."

Air Marshal Nzvede said Katandika's death had deprived the Air Force and the Zimbabwe Defence Forces of a loyal, committed and dedicated officer.

He described the late Wing Commander as a jovial individual who consistently placed service to the nation above personal interests.

Funeral and burial arrangements had not yet been announced at the time of publication.
