Senior military officer Major General (Retired) Richard Ruwodo, who died on July 7, has been declared a national hero and will be buried at the National Heroes Acre on Monday.

The announcement was made on Friday when Zanu PF National Chairperson and Minister of Defence, Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri, visited the Ruwodo family home in Glen Lorne, Harare, to convey President Emmerson Mnangagwa's condolences.

Muchinguri-Kashiri said the late military commander had been accorded the country's highest honour in recognition of his distinguished service during the liberation struggle and after Zimbabwe attained independence.

"He joined the liberation struggle at a tender age. He became part of the Zanu PF family. The President has sent us to convey our condolences. When he came from the war, he was considered a courageous man. After independence, he was given other tasks in the army. He was also involved in war veterans affairs. His Excellency has conferred national hero status to the late Major General (Rtd) Richard Ruwodo," she said.

Family spokesperson Lovemore Ruwodo welcomed the government's decision to confer national hero status on the late military officer.

"We remain grateful for this recognition considering the role that the late played," he said.

Major General (Rtd) Ruwodo served in the Zimbabwe National Army, rising through the ranks to Brigadier General before being promoted to the rank of Major General upon his retirement in 2008.

Following his retirement from active military service, he continued serving the government in senior administrative roles within the Ministry of Defence and War Veterans Affairs.

He served as Acting Permanent Secretary in the ministry before later holding the positions of Chief Director and Director for War Veterans' Affairs.

Major General (Rtd) Ruwodo is survived by his wife, Lois, and three children.

Mourners are gathered at the family home at Number 92 Folyjon Crescent, Glen Lorne, Harare, ahead of his burial at the National Heroes Acre on Monday.
