Police on high alert ahead of planned 31 July protests

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has assured Zimbabweans that adequate security measures are in place across the country ahead of planned protests on July 31, 2026, urging members of the public to continue with their normal daily activities without fear.

In a statement issued on July 29, ZRP national spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said police officers had been deployed nationwide to ensure the effective maintenance of law and order.

"The Zimbabwe Republic Police assures Zimbabweans of peace and security in the country. The Police has made deployments in all parts of the country for effective maintenance of law and order," Nyathi said.

The police assurance comes amid calls circulating on social media for nationwide demonstrations on July 31 against the recently enacted Constitutional Amendment Act No. 3.

The legislation, which was signed into law by President Emmerson Mnangagwa after being passed by Parliament, has become a source of political debate, with opposition groups and civil society organisations expressing concern over some of its provisions.

While the ZRP did not directly refer to the planned protests or the Constitutional Amendment Act in its statement, it urged citizens to promptly report any criminal conduct.

"The public should feel free to report any criminal activities which include threats, harassment or intimidation to the Police at any nearest Police Station or National Complaints Desk on (0242) 703631 or WhatsApp on 0712 800 197," the statement said.

The police reiterated their commitment to maintaining peace and public order, saying security deployments had been made across the country to ensure the safety of citizens and the protection of property.
