Harare eyes helicopter to boost emergency response

THE City of Harare is considering acquiring a helicopter to bolster its emergency response capabilities, with Mayor Jacob Mafume saying the aircraft could be deployed to respond to emergencies and help combat the growing number of fires across the capital.

Speaking during a full council meeting, Mafume said the local authority was exploring the purchase of a helicopter as part of efforts to strengthen the city's firefighting and disaster response capacity.

The proposal appeared to gather momentum on Tuesday after the mayor shared a video of himself aboard a helicopter, accompanied by the caption: "Test drive and your cries have been heard."

Also seen in the aircraft were Acting Town Clerk Advocate Warren Chiwawa and Acting Director of Urban Planning Services Samuel Nyabezi, fuelling speculation that the city is seriously evaluating the acquisition.

Harare has faced increasing pressure to improve its emergency services amid recurring fires and other incidents that have exposed shortcomings in its response capacity.

A helicopter could enhance the city's ability to reach inaccessible areas more quickly, assist in aerial firefighting, monitor disaster scenes and support rescue operations during major emergencies.

The proposed acquisition is likely to generate public debate over its cost and feasibility, with residents expected to weigh the potential benefits against the city's pressing service delivery challenges, including water supply, road maintenance and refuse collection.

Council has yet to announce when a final decision on the proposed purchase will be made or provide details on the expected cost and funding model for the aircraft.
