Armed robbers get away with US$108 000 from Chinese firm

TWO suspected armed robbers appeared at the Harare Magistrates Court on Monday following an alleged robbery at a Chinese-owned company in Ruwa in which US$108 000 was reportedly stolen.
One of the suspects was injured and apprehended by company workers as the gang attempted to flee the premises.
Tinei Makaripe (43), of Stoneridge, and Pungurai Mukambachaza (49), of Pomona City, appeared before magistrate Marehwanazvo Gofa, who remanded them in custody.
The State alleges that on Sunday, the two suspects and their accomplices scaled the perimeter wall at Xinda Castings in Ruwa before gaining entry into the premises.
Once inside, the suspects allegedly put on work suits and helmets to disguise themselves as company employees before storming into the office of Zhan Lingyue.
They allegedly produced firearms and demanded cash before ransacking the office and taking a satchel containing US$108 000.
The gang allegedly used a metal ladder to scale the precast wall as they attempted to escape.
Company workers reportedly gave chase and pelted the fleeing suspects with stones, resulting in Makaripe falling and being apprehended before he was handed over to police.
Mukambachaza and the other alleged accomplices reportedly managed to escape.
The State further alleges that Makaripe subsequently implicated Mukambachaza, leading detectives to recover US$4 900, which was allegedly part of the stolen money, as well as a mobile phone allegedly used during the commission of the offence.
The two suspects have also been linked to another robbery at Redan Service Station in Glaudina on June 22.
During that incident, an Itel A90 mobile phone, panic baton, pepper spray, fuel coupons and US$500 cash were allegedly stolen.
The suspects are also being investigated in connection with an attempted robbery at Kurima Centre in Msasa on September 12.
According to the State, the gang allegedly gained entry to the premises but fled empty-handed after a security reinforcement team intervened.
The latest case remains before the courts, and the accused are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
