Magistrate orders ZPCS to allow prisoners access to toothbrushes

The Harare magistrate has ordered the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) to allow the prisoners who were caught in the riot storm access to toothbrushes after the authorities reportedly denied them following the food riots.

THis was revealed by Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights Communications Officer Kumbirai Mafunda.

"So it had to take the intervention of some lawyers so that some prisoners vagezewo mazino? Prisoners Have Rights Too," he said.

"A Zimbabwean Magistrate has ordered the Zimbabwe Prison and Correctional Services officers to allow nine detainees who are detained in solitary confinement access to TOOTHBRUSHES, yes matoothbrush, tooth paste and bathing soap."

He said the detainees, who are accused of leading riots at Chikurubi Maximum Prison had been denied access to basic sanitary materials since they were arrested in March and detained in solitary confinement.
