The trial of a Harare man accused of slitting open his wife's stomach after accusing her of infidelity, was adjourned when he started behaving strangely. Obert Manenji (37) of 9586 Manyame Park, Chitungwiza, was referred for mental examinations to determine his state of mind. He is facing attempted murder charges and appeared before magistrate, Mr Adonia Masawi.

He was remanded to September 8. Prosecutor Mr Liberty Gono alleged that on April 12, Manenji was driving along Marimba Road in Harare in the company of his wife, Chipo Tanganyika. As they approached Zimbabwe Fertiliser Company, Manenji started accusing his wife of having an extramarital affair with a prophet who leads a Johanne Masowe eChishanu sect.

An altercation ensured and Manenji abruptly stopped the car. Sensing danger, Tanganyika alighted from the car and ran into nearby fields. Manenji allegedly gave chase before dragging her back to the parked car. He drew out a knife intending to stab her, but she managed to escape briefly before she stumbled on a rock and fell down.

She started screaming for help. It is alleged that Manenji, instead of offering help, stabbed her several times with a kitchen knife in the stomach. She collapsed at the sight of her own intestines, the court heard. Manenji drove off towards Mufakose leaving his wife for dead. He was spotted by Nelson Nechironga, a ZFC worker, who alerted police manning a roadblock along High Glen Road in Marimba.

Police rushed to the scene and ferried Tanganyika to Harare Hospital. Manenji was later arrested and led police to the recovery of the kitchen knife he used to commit the offence.
