Bubi Rural District Council (RDC) has introduced a plant and equipment levy which is intended to raise US$400 000 which will be used to purchase equipment for the rehabilitation of the roads in the district.

The funds will be raised from 15 000 households and about 200 businesses which include three mining companies.

Each household will be expected to pay a levy of $20 while companies will pay an amount equivalent to 20 percent of their trading licences.

The council is targeting to buy a bulldozer, excavator and a 30-tonne tipper truck to rehabilitate at least 200 kilometres of gravel roads and construct 50 kilometres of the road network in areas which do not have proper roads by the end of the year.

According to Bubi RDC chief executive officer Patson Mlilo, the council is targeting roads which are in resettlement areas since most of them have never had roads and are already inaccessible due to the heavy rains that have been experienced in the country.

Bubi RDC has already tarred 1,3 kilometres of Inyathi Hospital Road while another 1,5 kilometres is expected to be tarred at a cost of US$120 000 at the district centre.
