Woman smokes dagga to chase away evil spirits

A WOMAN who was on Monday fined $100 after she was found in possession of mbanje weighing 40 grams stunned the court when she said she possessed the illegal drug for her personal smoking as a way of chasing away evil spirits.
Zanele Moyo (30) of Masibambaneni village in Silalatshani area pleaded guilty to mbanje possession when she appeared before Filabusi magistrate Mzingaye Moyo. The magistrate convicted and fined her $100 with an option of 30 days in jail.
In her mitigation she said she is a single parent of one child and begged the court to give her a lenient sentence.
When asked why she possessed the illegal drug she said, "I smoke mbanje to chase away evil spirits."
The prosecutor Smart Tafireyi told the court that on March 20 this year police were on patrol in the village when they were told that Moyo possesses mbanje at her home.
They went to her home where they searched and recovered 40 grams of dagga in her room.
This led to her arrest.
