A gang of gun totting men descended on the Roman Catholic Church in Beitbridge town where they robbed a priest of R4 000, US$2 000 and two
laptops.

The officer commanding police in Beitbridge district, Chief Superintendent Lawrence Chinhengo, confirmed the incident. He said the suspects were still at large.

"We have since launched a manhunt for the suspects and we are also appealing to anyone with information that could lead to their arrest to inform us or visit any nearest police station," he said.

The priest, Father Jules Greber said the incident occurred on Saturday night.

He said the suspects two of them wielding rifles, forced the locked door open and demanded money.

"I was asleep when I heard some noise emanating from the main door and when I woke up, four men confronted me and two had rifles. They ordered me not to shout and threatened to shoot me before they took two laptops, US$2 000 and R4 000 and disappeared into the darkness," Father Greber said.

They however, did not harm the man of cloth.

The suspects got into the church premises after cutting the fence.
