Cash crisis: Schools must bear with parents

29 Apr 2016 at 07:29hrs | Views
The cash shortages currently bedevilling the country has sent us into panic.

For those who were around in 2008-2009 can testify the horrible experience we went through. It is an experience that one would want to see its recurrence.

Government must just see what it can do to avert this situation before it goes viral.

It is unfortunate that this is happening when parents are preparing for the opening of schools next week. Parents need money to pay fees and other necessities.

It is inconsiderate that some schools are actually demanding the payment of full fees on or before opening day when things are this ugly.

We kindly request government to chip in and direct schools to allow parents to make part payments. Some schools have actually written seculars to parents, warning them their children would not be allowed in school buses or premises without full fees.

We understand the schools have financial obligations to meet but at least 50% of the fees can take them somewhere. Things are tough for parents and headmasters must be considerate. It appears that some are refusing to be considerate, so Dr Lazurus Dokora must force them to be considerate.

The ministry should send its officials at various pick up points on Monday especially at the open space at Rotten Row and see how parents will be treated.

We also urge government to force shops and wholesales such as Mohammed Musa to have point of sale terminal in their shops so that people can transact electronically.

Every service provider such as ZESA, councils, shops etc must have these facilities so that we use plastic money to transact and in this way, cash shortage can be ameliorated.
