Organisers of this year's second edition of the 'Indaba Boss' anti-drugs and substances abuse pool tournament have appealed for land to establish an inclusive infrastructure which accommodate all demographic groups around Guruve communities (and other parts of Mashonaland Central province) in their quest to fight the generational abnormalities.
The tournament is set to take place on September 27, 2025, in honor of Journalist Simbarashe Sithole's tireless efforts to combat drug and substance abuse in Mashonaland Central Province, Zimbabwe.
This exciting event aims to bring together pool enthusiasts, community leaders, and supporters to celebrate Sithole's dedication to creating a safer and healthier environment for the province's residents.
Speaking during a press conference and stakeholders preparation update event in Guruve late Thursday, chairperson of the Guruve Pool League, Mr. Joram Hwande said that the event is more than a celebration, but an ideal platform for annual engagement to combat drugs and substances abuse.
"We have organised this annual event to complement Simbarashe Sithole's quest to fight drugs and substances abuse amongst our communities. He shared with us his vision for a drug free society as mechanism for preserving morality using sport and we saw it fit to ensure that his birthday celebrations would therefore be used to amplify anti-drugs and substances abuse messaging," Hwande said.
"We are also appealing for land to responsible authorities to enable us to gather all demographic groups of our communities under an inclusive infrastructure which enable everyone to drive the message through peer to peer engagements. The infrastructure would therefore becomes an enabling environment for multi-stakeholders curriculum for anti-drugs and substances abuse," Hwande added.
"The major objective behind this tournament is to raise awareness about the dangers of substance abuse and promote community engagement in the fight against drugs. The tournament will feature talented pool players from across the province, competing in various categories, including 8-ball and 9-ball events. The event will not only showcase their skills but also serve as a platform to promote Sithole's message of hope and resilience in the face of substance abuse," Hwande said.
The planned tournament aligns with Sithole's efforts to engage the community in the fight against substance abuse. By hosting this event, organizers hope to raise awareness through educating the public about risks associated with substance abuse and the importance of seeking help.
It will also encourage community members to get involved in the fight against substance abuse and support local initiatives. It will also provide a platform for local pool players to showcase their skills and compete at a grassroots and district levels.
As the tournament approaches, anticipation is building, and supporters are eagerly awaiting the opportunity to come together and celebrate Sithole's remarkable work. With its unique blend of sports and social awareness, this event promises to be an unforgettable experience for all involved.
Meanwhile, the defending champions from previous tournament and current spokesperson, Mr Kudakwashe Chimanikire has announced that they are inviting everyone to the event in order to widen their scope of audience.
"We invite several communities to attend the event and make sure they drive our anti-drugs fight message around the province's four cardinal points. We are eager to retain and defend the Indaba Boss trophy, though the contest or race seem to be quite tense given the level of preparation so far," Chimanikire said.
"We are targeting to continue engaging all age groups through sports," Chimanikire added.
Sithole has said his intention is to use the birthday celebration annually as a benchmark to assess the impact of sports in fighting drugs and substances abuse.
"This will be used as a measurement on the impact of sports in fighting drugs scourge. It will also be a platform for self introspection on assessing the strength, weaknesses, opportunities and threats associated with drugs and substances abuse," Sithole said.
