Choppies set to launch its Gwanda Supermarket tomorrow

BOTSWANA AND JOHANNESBURG Stock Exchange-listed retail chain - Choppies - is set to officially open it Gwanda Supermarket tomorrow 25 June at 9AM. The store is inviting all Gwanda residents to join management in the opening of the store and there are prices to be won.
The store will be located at stand Number 2856 Phakama Business Centre in Jahunda Township which used to house the Nkolomi franchise.
Bulawayo24.com has it on record that prominent Gwanda business man Mgcini Nkolomi sold his Spar premises to yet to be known company which offered Choppies the same premises to rent.
A company bought the premises which used to accommodate the Nkolomi franchise, which incorporated a supermarket, Butchery and bottle store and the company has offered the premises for rent to Choppies.
Choppies is set to continue expanding its foothold in Zimbabwe, with four more supermarkets set to be opened in Bulawayo and Harare before the end of the year, group chief executive officer, Mr Ramachandran Ottappath, was recently quoted.
Group chairman Mr Festus Mogae was recently quoted saying they were satisfied with the amount of trade taking place in the country and that they were still on the spending stage as a group.
"We are still developing the number of shops here in Zimbabwe and although we are operating in a competitive market, we have learnt to co-exist with the competition, as you will note, Choppies Botswana and South Africa are still growing as we offer better value for our customers," he said.
A Choppies official said in the next two years they would build a distribution centre in Bulawayo and according to reports the chain has invested about $21 million in Zimbabwe.
Presently, Choppies is a dominant player in Bulawayo with 15 supermarkets and recently the retail chain opened shop in Harare.
Choppies boasts of more than 1,500 workers.
In the long term Choppies is targeting 60-plus stores in Zimbabwe.
The company's revenue for Zimbabwe operations in the year 2014 stood at $2.5million with a net profit of $1.95 million.
Outside Zimbabwe, the retail chain's foot print extends to rural locations, which have been traditionally underserviced in the retail sector, taking stores to population centres and maintain convenient shop hours and affordable prices for the consumer.
Choppies Zimbabwe is a joint venture between Botswana's Choppies Enterprises and the Vice President Phelekezela Mphoko's family.
Choppies is Botswana's largest retail chain with 63 outlets in Botswana and 13 in South Africa and is mulling plans to expand to Zambia and Mozambique and other countries in Sub Saharan Africa.
