Gauteng police are continuing their search for the firearm allegedly used by Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe, son of the late Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe, in a shooting incident that left a 23-year-old gardener in critical condition.
The incident occurred last Thursday at Mugabe's residence in the upmarket Hyde Park suburb, north of Johannesburg. Police confirmed that two men, aged 33 and 24, were taken into custody for questioning and are expected to face charges of attempted murder.
Gauteng provincial police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi told IOL News that the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unclear. "The firearm has not been found. Two people were taken in for questioning so that we can determine what actually happened and what led to the shooting," she said.
Police have deployed divers and a dog unit to search the property. A cartridge was recovered and will form part of the ongoing investigation, but the weapon itself has not yet been located.
"The gardener is currently in critical condition in hospital. It was indicated that he is in a critical condition, but we are hoping that he will be fine," Nevhuhulwi said.
Chatunga Mugabe and the second suspect are expected to appear at Alexandra Magistrate's Court on Monday as investigations continue. Authorities have warned that no further updates will be provided unless there is a development deemed significant for public communication.
The case has attracted considerable attention due to the high-profile status of the Mugabe family and ongoing questions about the events that led to the shooting.
