SHURUGWI - Thousands of artisanal miners and local communities in the Midlands Province are set to benefit from a newly commissioned US$300,000 gold milling and processing centre, expected to drive economic growth and improve livelihoods in the region.
The facility was officially handed over by the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Midlands Province, Honourable Owen Ncube, who hailed the project as a transformative step for small-scale miners in Shurugwi District.
"This centre was funded by Cheng-Xi Chengetai Investments. It will provide accessible and affordable milling services to over 5,000 beneficiaries, promoting local economic empowerment, job creation, and productivity," Minister Ncube said.
He commended Cheng-Xi Investments for its commitment to responsible mining practices and for advancing Zimbabwe-China bilateral mining agreements, which have played a key role in infrastructure development across the province.
The centre is equipped to support safe and efficient gold processing, and is expected to significantly boost the mining sector's contribution to the provincial economy.
According to the ZIMSTATS 2024 report, mining accounts for 36% of Midlands Provincial GDP, with gold identified as a high-value mineral driving growth and investment.
The commissioning marks a milestone in the government’s efforts to formalise the informal mining sector, empower communities, and promote sustainable development in line with Vision 2030.
