Gun-totting parent causes a scene at schools rugby match violence

Police have launched an investigation into a firearm incident and assault case that occurred during a rugby match between Christian Brothers College (CBC) and Eaglesvale College in Harare, following violent scenes that reportedly erupted at the end of the encounter.
According to reports, tensions flared after the match, culminating in a melee during which an unidentified parent allegedly stormed onto the field and confronted several players.
Witnesses claim the individual physically manhandled some of the players before allegedly producing a firearm and using it to threaten those involved.
The incident has sparked concern among parents, school authorities and the wider sporting community, with calls for increased security and stricter measures to prevent violence at school sporting events.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) national spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed that investigations were underway.
"The ZRP confirms that investigations are currently underway in connection with a firearm incident and assault case which occurred at Eaglesvale College, Harare on 13 June 2026," said Commissioner Nyathi.
"The incident took place during a rugby match between Christian Brothers College (CBC) and Eaglesvale College. The ZRP urges calm among parents, students, administrators and stakeholders as police investigations continue."
Police have not yet disclosed the identity of the suspect or whether any arrests have been made.
Authorities are expected to interview witnesses and review available evidence as part of efforts to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
The disturbing events have raised fresh concerns about safety and discipline at school sporting fixtures, with stakeholders expected to engage on measures aimed at ensuring that sporting competitions remain safe environments for players, officials and spectators.
