Sungura musician Romeo 'Simbi Hombe' Gasa has challenged Sungura artistes to advance the genre.
Speaking on the sidelines of his Harare show at Food nest restaurant in Belvedere on Friday Gasa said Sungura is not advancing because the artistes do not want to mordernise the genre.
"Sungura is not advancing because we are refusing to mordernise the genre hence many think Sungura is for the old and backward people but that is not the case hence we have to advance our genre," Gasa said.
In trying to advance his music Gasa is now performing mostly in class venues like hotels and restaurants.
"Im trying to improve Sungura by perfoming in better venues because Zim dancehall is giving us stiff competition so it is up to us the Sungura artistes," he added.
Gasa said he respects the King of Sungura Alick Macheso for having his own brand but urged fellow artistes to advance the genre.
"I respect our elder Macheso who has managed to hold on to the genre and pulling huge crowds but to other artistes we should advance the genre not to copy Macheso because he has his own way of doing things."
Gasa hailed the late Tongai Moyo for his smartness and uplifting Sungura.
"I appreciate the late Tongai Moyo he changed the face of Sungura through dressing smartly so these elders did their part we ought to also advance the genre," he added.
However as usual Gasa did not disappoint on stage at the colourful venue with his new album "Phone yababa imhiripiri" which left fans clamouring for more.
