Macheso disappoint fans

SUNGURA ace, Alick Macheso's less inspiring performance at The Platinum last Friday left his legion of fans demanding a new album from the bassist. Fears abound that the sungura guru is now in the twilight of his once blossoming career.

Contrary to what his fans expected during the night, Macheso who jumped on stage around 10pm fed a sizeable crowd with hoards of his yester-year hits before he belted out a few tracks from his forthcoming and much-awaited album.

A section of seemingly jaded revellers kept calling for new stuff from the Tafadzwa Nyarara hit-maker who kept belting a litany of old hits such as Madhuve, Madhawu and Shedia.

His stage performances especially in Mutare and Chipinge have become monotonous.

Fans who spoke to The Weekender said Macheso's performances had become predictable and had dismally failed to enchant his loyal fans who despite having released his last album, Kwatabva Mitunhu (Kure kwekure) in 2012, remained loyal and patient.

The sungura kingpin, speaking through his manager, Lucky Macheso, however, vowed that the new album would definitely be released before year end.

"I realised that revellers would go into ecstasy whenever Mdara (Alick) belted a new track.

"We value our beloved fans and we would like to assure them that the new project is coming before the end of this year. That is certain. We are a brand and we are glad with attendances during our shows," said Lucky.

Said one fan, Milton Ngirazi from Zimunya: "Macheso is a good musician, but his performances off late have become dreary. We are tired of his old songs. He is now predictable and the dancers don't have anything new to offer. We need a new album. We have been starved enough."

Lincoln Mashezha of Sakubva, said the dominance of Zim-dancehall had contributed immensely to Orchestra Mberikwazvo's dip of form.

"Call Soul Jah Love, Killer T or even Jah Prayzah and you will see what I am talking about.

"People will storm in hundreds and would enjoy every minute because they always offer something for their fans. Most people are fed up with sungura. Dancehall is rocking. I came here expecting something new, but it is the same old story.

"We hope next time he comes here he would have released a new album and play all of them not bits and pieces," he said.

A well-known female fan and a regular at Macheso's shows, popularly known as Palma, said she was dearly missing the old Mberikwazvo bandsmen particularly chanter and dancer, Jonasi Kasamba.

"I love Macheso's music, but I miss those guys especially Jonasi. His replacement (Zhili Mumbamulapi) is not good enough," she said.
