It's been exactly 6 months since 19 year old Darlington Chikwewo a.k.a Young DLC moved to South Africa to pursue his passion in music, through studying Digital music composition and production at Boston College in Johannesburg.
Armed with a dream to play in Ibiza before he turns 21, Young DLC came across a Rage Reload Rookie DJ competition online and immediately entered himself. Through the support of family and friends, Young DLC managed to make it in the Top 24 and was number 15. The competition was open to all residents of the Republic of South Africa.
Born and bred in Zimbabwe, Young DLC grew up under the tutelage of his father and also a music producer, Mr Lazarus Chikwewo, who owns the Hatfield based VOJ Studios. It was at VOJ studios that artists like Diana Samkange, Ngoni Kambarami, Kudzi Nyakudja, Olinda Marova and Sabastian Magacha recorded some of their early hits
Fast forward several years later, Young DLC says he got interested in dance music as he was amazed by the lifestyle; this also put him on a quest to prove that electronic music is not only for a specific type of race or people. Young DLC has been learning music production at VOJ studios since he was 9 years old, but started DJing in early 2014. In December 2014 he was commissioned to produce the 2014 Zimbabwe Color Run theme song, where he also got to play, his first ever gig as an EDM DJ.
"We are excited about this achievement. At this stage we are not worried about winning the competition, but if it happens that we win, we would be really excited. Young DLC has proven to many South African DJs and artists that he is versatile. He made a choice that his specialization will be Electronic Dance music, but can also produce house/hiphop and so far so good, he is doing well." Young DLC's Manager Tendai Joe
The Rage Festival will run from the 28th of November to the 4th of December 2015. Tendai Joe said they value all the support from Zimbabwe and Zimbabweans in the diaspora.
