There have been a lot of unconfirmed Twitter rumours that Former Zambian president Kenneth Kaunda has passed away. One of the messages looks like a statement from South Africa's Democratic Alliance party leader Mnusi Maimane.

Kaunda led Zambia to independence in 1964.

Kaunda, 93, was hospitalised on Wednesday after complaining of fatigue.

The Zambian High Commissioner to South Africa, Emmannuel Mwamba, had indicated that the former President is likely to be discharged from hospital on Thursday.

"Remember, he's 93 years old. I think the doctors wanted to assess him. We've been given a report that he's doing quite well. He's under medical observation but we are very hopeful. The doctors even stated that he might be discharged very soon," says Mwamba.

A South African journalist Simon Allison has dismissed the rumours and confirmed that Kenneth Kaunda has NOT passed away. He is currently in hospital and expected to be discharged tomorrow.

Below is a statement that has been doing rounds on social media. It has not been verified whether it is from the Mnusi Maimane's office or it is fake news.
