Zuma wins ANC leadership contest

The ANC announced the results of its leadership elections at its national elective conference at the University of the Free State campus in Mangaung on Tuesday afternoon.

President Jacob Zuma won an overwhelming majority of votes to retain his position as ANC president, beating his deputy Kgalema Motlanthe, who ran against him.

Zuma won 2 983 votes while Motlanthe received 991 votes. A total of 3 977 votes were cast.

Motlanthe withdrew his nomination for the position of deputy president of the ANC. This position was won by Cyril Ramaphosa leaving Motlanthe out of the new ANC leadership structure.

Cyril Ramaphosa received 3 018 votes, while Mathews Phosa received 470 votes and Tokyo Sexwale received 463 votes.

Baleka Mbete was elected chairperson of the ANC, receiving 3 010 votes, while Thandi Modise received 939 votes.

Gwede Mantashe was re-elected ANC secretary general, getting 3 058 votes, while Fikile Mbalula received 901 votes. The position of deputy secretary-general was uncontested, and will be filled by Jessie Duarte.

Zweli Mkhize received 2 988 votes for the position of treasurer general, while Paul Mashatile received 961 votes.
