Intensified border patrols, quarantine zones and many, many inoculations have been launched by the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) in South Africa and has taken following an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) in Zimbabwe.
The directors of Animal Health and Veterinary Services of South Africa, Botswana and Zimbabwe held a meeting in Harare to assess and discuss the current FMD situation in Zimbabwe, DAFF spokesperson Makenosi Maroo said.
Zimbabwe's chief veterinary officer assured his counterparts the situation was under control, albeit at great expense. "Control measures to mitigate risks that could threaten the country's FMD-free zone status have been instituted by the Zimbabwean veterinary authorities," said Maroo.
"Over 450 000 doses of vaccine have been procured and delivered to different parts of the country where there is active foot-andmouth disease infection."
Maroo said the area under quarantine was near the Madimbo Corridor extending west to Tuli Circle. No animals were allowed to enter or leave this area.
