WHEN the M1 South Highway in Joburg came to a standstill yesterday morning, many motorists and taxi commuters thought roadworks were again to blame.
But those closer to the action had ringside seats. They watched as over 70 cops swarmed the area to catch thugs who had moments earlier robbed a woman and run into the bush.
Daily Sun reported that Eva Ntsabo (39) from Palm Springs was held up at gun point. This was after a taxi dropped her far from her destination.
"I asked the taxi driver to drop me at Southgate Mall but he went on until he reached the highway.
"I got off and started walking towards the mall when a man asked me where I was going," said Eva.
Eva told Daily Sun she didn't pay attention to the man and kept on walking. Then he pulled out a gun and pushed it against her spine!
"We went into the bush where he instructed me to take off my earrings and wedding ring, before taking my phone. Two other men joined us and I was told to take out my bank card," said Eva.
The two men took her bank card and went to the mall to withdraw money.
They didn't have the pin and told the other one to call them and give it to them.
"He pointed the gun at my head forcing me to give him the pin, but I couldn't remember it as I was in shock," Eva said.
Then a police helicopter hovered above them and the thug started running.
Lieutenant-Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said two of the three suspects who robbed the woman were arrested not far from the scene and a third suspects is on the run.
"A toy gun was found in the possession of one of the suspects. They will be charged with armed robbery when they appear at the Joburg Magistrates Court within 48 hours."
Dlamini said Eva saw a police car and stopped it. The suspects fled the scene on foot in different directions.
The police chased them and managed to arrest two, one of whom was hiding in a storm drainage pipe near the highway. He said three cellphones were recovered and a search for the third suspect is still continuing.
