A man who broke out of Police cells has been sentenced to a three months suspended jail term after his re-arrest.
Blessing Gwashavanhu (26) of Kambuzuma Harare pleaded guilty to escaping from lawful custody charge before Bulawayo magistrate Tinashe Tashaya.
Tashaya sentenced him to three months wholly suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour.
On July 1 2013 at 11 pm Constable Jonathan Madonho resumed duty at the Bulawayo Central Police Station and he was assigned to be in charge of the prison cells.
About 30 prisoners were later locked in the same cells including Gwashavanhu who was detained under detention book number 2831/13.

On July 2 2013 at 6am when Madonho was handing over duty to another shift, he discovered that Gwashavanhu had escaped from the cell.
He advised his superiors and further checks for Gwashavanhu established that he had escaped as evidence by the electric cable which was found suspended down making them suspect that he used it to escape.
In April 2017 information was received that Gwashavanhu was arrested by detectives from the Criminal Investigations Department Storebreaking in Harare and was serving a sentence for other unlawful entry and theft cases that he committed in Harare.
A request was made that he be transferred to Bulawayo Khami prison so that he can be brought to court for his pending cases in Bulawayo. Gwashavanhu had been arrested for unlawful entry and theft when he escaped from Bulawayo Central Police Cell.
He was then transferred to Bulawayo prompting him to appear in court charged with escape from lawful custody.
