A Los Angeles-based dance company, Jazz Tap Ensemble is set to perform at the opening ceremony of Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF) this afternoon in Bulawayo.
The Ensemble landed in Bulawayo last Sunday for a full week of free workshops and performances that have been taking place since Monday.
The group that has already met with Mayor of Bulawayo, Thaba Mpofu will proceed to Harare to participate at Hifa.
"The group is set to perform with senior dancers of Iyasa and Siyaya before a small audience in the afternoon today in Bulawayo."
They will also perform tonight at the official opening of ZITF. We don't know as yet if they are going to share the stage with Iyasa and Siyaya on the opening night" Jillian Bonnarddeux the US embassy public relations officer told the Daily News.
The 10-member group is having discussions with Bulawayo youth groups, performance and art students. On Saturday from 1-3pm the group will perform at a talent search show, "Bulawayo's Most Amazing Talents," at the Bulawayo Theatre.
"We felt it was very important for the musicians and dancers to spend time outside of Harare besides performing at Hifa," said Sharon Hudson-Dean, Consular for Public Affairs at the US Embassy, Harare.
"The US performers are eager to share their style of jazz music and tap dancing, two well-loved American traditions, with Bulawayo audiences and to learn from local artists about their traditional forms of cultural expression."
"The group engaged in cultural exchange with local groups. The Zimbabwean dance group has been learning tap dancing whilst Ensemble has been learning traditional dances which include igumboots dance and inquza".
Desmond Ntini coordinator of the Ensemble visitors in Bulawayo told the Daily News.
On Tuesday the groups performed for the Bulawayo Mayor, Mpofu, local and foreign visitors who were already in Bulawayo for ZITF.
