Zapu doesn't have confidence in itself

THE opposition Zapu party has welcomed calls by Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) leader Nelson Chamisa to form a grand coalition to challenge Zanu-PF in the 2023 general elections.
While addressing party supporters at White City Stadium in Bulawayo on Saturday, Chamisa called for a coalition with progressive forces and he mentioned Zapu as one of the parties.
Zapu spokesperson Msongelwa Ndlovu said they welcomed Chamisa's call for unity.
"Our feeling is that such a call is a confirmation that the work being undertaken by Zapu after the elective congress which ushered in the leadership of (Sibangilizwe) Nkomo is bearing fruits as our membership is growing and our visibility is palpable," Ndlovu said.
"Otherwise such invitation is only advanced to an organisation with something to offer. We must reiterate, however, that any forms of co-operation and unity of Zimbabweans against the government of (President Emmerson) Mnangagwa is welcome and must be encouraged by all well-meaning countrymen," he said.
Ndlovu said Zapu was preoccupied with building the party and winning the March 26 by-elections in areas which they were contesting.
He said political circumstances between now and 2023 would determine whether an alliances would be strategic for the survival and growth of Zapu.
"Our preparations for the by-elections are going on well and as testimony to that, we have not only attracted the interest of voters, but political opponents who are either seeking alliances with us, or seeking to destroy us. We are resolute that both attempts will be rewarded by victory in these by-elections,'' he said.
