Highlanders head coach, Baltemar Brito, is poised to assume the role of interim coach for the Zimbabwe Senior Men's National Team, following the recommendation of the Zimbabwe Football Association's (ZIFA) nomination committee. ZIFA has formally requested Brito's release from his current position at the premier club Highlanders to take on the demanding role as the top coach for the Warriors.
In a letter to Highlanders, ZIFA stated, "The Nomination Committee would like to request your Executive permission to engage one of your employees in the name of Brito Baltemar Jose Oliveira for a possible appointment as the interim Senior Men's National Team Coach. Whereas he indicated he is a permanent employee of your esteemed organization, it is in that light of integrity we hereby pray you shall find it beneficial to release him for the envisaged national duty during their interim nomination period."
Brito, who took over as Highlanders coach last year, has had a successful tenure, guiding the premier club to an impressive 19-game unbeaten streak this season. Highlanders chairman Johnfat Sibanda expressed pride in Brito's selection for the national team role and emphasized the club's willingness to support his new responsibilities.
"This is an honor to us at Highlanders and a significant vote of confidence in our entire system. We take this with pride, and we do not hesitate to agree to have the coach take up this significant responsibility of leading our senior national team as it resumes its duties after the unfortunate suspension by FIFA," Sibanda stated.
Brito is expected to lead Zimbabwe's quest for its first-ever qualification for the FIFA World Cup finals. Zimbabwe competes in Group C of the qualifying campaign, alongside football powerhouses Nigeria, neighboring South Africa, Benin, Lesotho, and Rwanda. His first assignment is an away match against Rwanda scheduled for November this year.
