The Democratic Official Party (DOP) has issued an open call for interested citizens to apply as potential representatives for the party in the upcoming by-elections scheduled for December 7.
These by-elections in Zimbabwe were necessitated by the recent recall of Members of Parliament (MPs) and councillors from the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC). Sengezo Tshabangu, who identifies as the interim secretary general of CCC, instigated the recall, affecting 15 MPs and 17 councillors affiliated with the opposition party.
DOP's leader, Harry Wilson, who previously ran in the presidential election, has expressed his support for these recalls and announced that the party is actively seeking applications from individuals interested in contesting the by-elections.
In his statement, Wilson stated, "We have reached out to the public, inviting them to submit their applications if they wish to run in the upcoming by-elections. Our aim is to build a formidable team, which is why we are extending this opportunity for people to compete on our party's platform."
He continued, "The DOP sees a chance for redemption in the forthcoming by-elections. We are also actively looking for new candidates to serve as councillors and join our ranks."
Additionally, an online application form has been made available for aspiring councillors, with the deadline for submission set for November 7, 2023. The application form includes a series of questions designed to evaluate a candidate's suitability for the position.
Wilson emphasized, "Our goal is to emphasize unity and diversity by selecting individuals who are the community's preferred choice to lead their own communities. We will not impose any candidates on the communities, as the communities themselves are best acquainted with their potential leaders."
