OPPOSITION FreeZim Congress leader Joseph Makamba Busha has launched a blistering attack on proposed constitutional amendments being pushed by the ruling Zanu PF under President Emmerson Mnangagwa, accusing the party of plotting to entrench its grip on power and "destroy what is left of the country."

The proposed changes, already approved by Cabinet, seek to extend presidential and parliamentary terms from five to seven years, suspend the 2028 harmonised elections and allow the President to be elected by Parliament rather than through a direct popular vote.

Busha told NewZimbabwe.com Friday that the amendments were illegitimate and crafted to serve narrow party interests.

"Zanu PF and the President have never respected the people of Zimbabwe and the Constitution. First there was never and tomorrow there will be no Vision 2030 for Zimbabwe," Busha said.

"This is a Zanu PF agenda to preserve Zanu PF itself, to preserve what has been looted and lastly to destroy what is left of the country, making everyone a beggar."

The opposition leader insisted that any constitutional changes not subjected to a national referendum would lack legitimacy, warning Zimbabweans against what he described as a repeat of past political misdirection.

"No amendments outside a referendum are legitimate. Zimbabwe cannot be misled like in the 2017 coup. Elections must be held in 2028. Let us join and work together against the rise of dictatorship and extremism in our country and elsewhere in the world," Busha said.

His remarks come amid growing resistance from opposition parties and civic society organisations over the controversial proposals currently before Parliament.

Several opposition figures have called for nationwide protests against the amendments, arguing they threaten democratic governance and constitutionalism.

Meanwhile, government has warned that any attempts to stage protests against the proposed changes will be dealt with decisively, raising the prospect of heightened political tensions as debate over the reforms intensifies.
