A VAGRANT residing at a squatter camp near Bradfield shopping centre in Bulawayo violently struck a colleague with a huge stone on the head and seriously injured him in the process, after accusing him of flirting with his girlfriend.

Mxolisi Mabhena (22) pleaded guilty when he appeared before Mr Takunda Mthetho at Tredgold magistrates' court and was remanded in custody to 10 April.

He is facing allegations of contravening section 47 of the criminal law and codification Act Chapter 9:23.

Presenting the court case, the prosecutor, Mrs Eunice Kamema, said on the evening of 23 March this year, Mabhena arrived at his place of residence with $40 and invited the complainant, Gerald Mavinyu, for a beer binge at the city centre.

However, Mavinyu turned down the offer citing that he was exhausted and needed to rest, leading to the accused leaving in a huff.

The accused returned from his beer-drinking spree in a drunken stupor and picked a boulder.

He proceeded to Mavinyu's shack where he aimed his missile to the head of his sleeping colleague while hailing obscenities at him, accusing him of flirting with his girlfriend who was witnessing the debacle from a distance and appeared in court as state witness.

The complainant failed to turn up for the case as he was still admitted at the United Bulawayo Hospital following the injuries he sustained from the assault.
