HIGHLANDERS Football Club - deep in debt and struggling for money - inexplicably charged millionaire Harare preacher Walter Magaya, a mere $100 for use of their sports dub for his crusade held yesterday.
Magaya hired the open space at the Highlanders clubhouse in downtown Bulawayo, for just $100 from 9AM to 5PM, according to a receipt circulating online.
But the crusade, attended by thousands of followers, went well into the night.
Magaya, said by followers to be a prophet of God, took offerings and sold DVDs, "anointing oil" and other merchandise at the event, earning tens of thousands of dollars.
On his last visit to Bulawayo he used the Amazulu Sports Club, which according to sources cost over $2,000.
Highlanders Chief Executive Officer Ndumiso Gumede last night defended their charges, crediting Magaya's church for sprucing up their ground which was poorly maintained.
Bosso is reeling under a $600,000 debt that has been accumulating since 2009.
Gumede said the church neglected to tell him they were making the booking for Magaya. "I thought it was a local branch of PHD Ministries that wanted to sell the anointing oils at the venue. How was I supposed to know that PHD is Magaya's?" asked Gumede.
He said the open space hired to Magaya was neglected and needed some sprucing up.
Members of the PHD Ministries spent hours cleaning up the place, preparing for yesterday's event.
Gumede added: "It's club policy to charge $30 per hour for events held at the venue.
They booked the venue from 12PM to 3PM. However, we are charging them $150 on top because they took an extra five hours."
However, a copy of the receipt for $100 that PHD Ministries allegedly paid to Bosso shows the church booked the venue from 9AM to 5PM.
