A BULAWAYO woman has been arrested for hitting her husband with a head of cabbage twice for allegedly buying rotten tomatoes.
Nyasha Muzenda, 50, hit Roseville Muzenda, 57, with the cabbage after she discovered that three out of about 13 tomatoes that he had bought were rotten. She accused her husband of being careless.
Nyasha pleaded guilty to a charge of physical abuse when she appeared before provincial magistrate Willard Maphios Moyo on Friday.
She told the court that she hit her husband because she was angered by his remarks when she reprimanded him over the rotten tomatoes.
"Your worship, I acted on the spur of the moment. After questioning my husband for buying rotten tomatoes, he said that's why I was nicknamed 'Mhiripiri' meaning 'Chillies'. That infuriated me to the extent that I threw a cabbage at him," said Nyasha.
The woman was given a suspended sentence for five years on condition that she does not commit a similar offence within that period.
Prosecuting, Nomzamo Ndlovu told the court that on Thursday last week, at around 6PM, Roseville got home with a cabbage and tomatoes.
"After taking the cabbage from Roseville, Nyasha started shouting at him accusing him of buying rotten tomatoes. She then took the cabbage and threw it at her husband twice," said Ndlovu.
